This post is all about biblical reminders for a broken heart.
Going through heartbreak can be one of the most devastatingly awful things that this life has to offer. As a child of God, knowing how to navigate through it is a little different for us. Rather than seeking comfort and satisfaction with the things of this world, we must seek Christ. He is the true giver of peace and comfort, and we will heal a lot faster if we go directly to him. Praying, fasting, and worshiping God are all key ways to heal and move on. Reading the Word of God, and his promises to us, can bring us an extra level of comfort we never knew possible. God’s word is his love story to us, and he knows this is something that each one of us will go through. So, he has prepared for us words/stories that can help us.
Here are the top 5 Biblical reminders for a broken heart.
5 Biblical Reminders for a Broken Heart
1. Jesus Understands Everything You are Going Through
“O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” Psalms 139:1-4 NKJV
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16 NKJV
God came down from heaven and became a human just like you and me. He experienced everything that we do. He was betrayed, rejected, hurt, abandoned, and even cried. On a much deeper level, God’s heart breaks for his children and humanity every day. So, never feel alone in your distress. Go to God and tell him all about it. He sees everything, and knows everything, and understands everything. He will give you the right comfort and the right support that you need specifically for your situation. Your family and friends can only understand to a limited extent. God reads your heart and your very thoughts and knows what you need and when you need it. Just pray and ask.
2. We do not have to understand everything.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;” Proverbs 3:5 NKJV
A common question we ask ourselves when we are broken-hearted is “Why?” We start to wonder why this situation had to happen and why it had to happen to us, especially when we believe we did nothing to deserve it. This is the time where our faith in Christ gets tested and matters most. Absolutely nothing takes God by surprise. He has a plan for your life, and even though we may not see or understand it now, we have to trust that he knows what is best and wants what is best for us. The loss of a loved family member, romantic partner, or even your own child may seem like there is no way that this is the best for you.
However, there are certain situations we have to go through for his greater purpose. Whether it is to become stronger in God, help someone else who has also gone through it, or for us to change and grow. Remember that this world is evil and full of heartbreak and sorrow, and this wasn’t God’s initial plan for us when he made us. Everyone on earth goes through this because of sin. The difference with people who believe in God and those who don’t, is we have hope. We know this isn’t the end, we know that everything is for our good, and we know that even though this doesn’t make sense right now, God is working things out in our favor. He will keep us, and he will provide for us, and he won’t ever let anything happen to us that we won’t be able to handle and grow from. Trust Him. He knows it all.
3. There is a greater promise for us if we just hold on.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”” Revelation 21:4 NKJV
Continuing with what I mentioned before, this life on earth is not the end of your story. We have a greater promise that even though we may go through pain and suffering here, God will redeem us and restore us in the end. This current life is like a blink of an eye compared to forever in eternity. Comfort yourself with God’s promise that everything you go through will work out and it will all be okay someday. God won’t leave you here in this pain. This hurt and sorrow cannot remotely compare to the glory that will be revealed in us (Romans 8:18). Hold on, don’t lose your faith, and your reward will be great.
4. Everything is working for your good
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 NKJV
I briefly mentioned this before, but this concept is so important to understand. Even in our sorrow and pain, we must hold on to the realization that every single thing that happens to us in our lives will be for our good. We may not see it right now, but just know that whether it happens in this life, or the life to come, this situation is for our betterment. It is for our purpose, it is for our calling, and it is for God’s glory.
5. Learn from your mistakes and guard your heart
“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23 NKJV
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 NKJV
The most painful lesson to learn when you have a broken heart is how to avoid it from happening again. Now, in certain situations, the cause of the heartbreak is out of your control, such as the death of a family member or loved one. However, if this heartbreak is from most other situations, there can be something you can take away from it. Ask God to guard your heart. Be careful when you see signs and telling situations that are similar to what you experienced before. A lot of heartbreak comes from not knowing your worth and letting people take advantage of your heart. This is very hard to learn and grow from but continue in prayer and ask God for the confidence and the ability to. Heartbreak changes us, but if we seek God through our pain, God can allow it to change us for the better, not the worse.
